One of the state's top 15 and under squads makes a splash.
A nice, friendly trip to the Bluegrass state will usually do a body good especially if while your their you go out and win a tournament right out from under the home teams. The Tennessee Tigers did just that this weekend playing unblemished basketball while capturing the title at the National Grassroots Shootout.
The Tigers breezed through pool play defeating the Flint Affiliation, Indiana Sharks Bluechips and the Murfreesboro Stars to advance to bracket play. A tough fight with perennial power Martin Brothers resulted in a victory and the momentum carried over through another tough contest with the West Virginia Select. The championship game saw the Tigers tangle with the always stout Spiece bunch from Indiana.
Following the lead of their mentor Drew Maddux, the former Vanderbilt hero, the Tigers showed their mental prowess and came from behind to win the Shootout. Sterling performances and accolades were everywhere to be found. Running the show and making all his teammates better was Ensworth point guard extrodianaire Taverus Jefferson. The cat-quick Jefferson belies his age with his ability to lead and distribute. His defensive prowess is unmatched and his all-out hustle will take him far.
Zeke Mason (Davidson Academy) continued his solid inside play and Gary Pope (Ensworth) provided consistent scoring the entire weekend. Also playing well were Marcus Cantrell (Maplewood) and Hunter Miller (CPA).
