Nashville leaves it's mark in Indy.
The Nashville Celtics must have felt like the odd team out. The Hoosier Spring Shootout is a tournament that is predominantly loaded with teams from Ohio and Indiana.
The best way to get some respect and turn some heads is to win. That plan is exactly what the Nashville Celtics 17's decided they would do. Winning both of their games in pool play over the Indiana Lightning and the Indiana Whirlwind, the Celtics made the jaunt to bracket play with visions of big trophies in their minds.
A tough fought contest resulted in a 76-70 victory over the Columbus Knights and they followed that with an easy victory over Just Play from Indiana. A huge 71-52 blowout of the Adidas Cleveland Basketball Club, who featured two of the top players in the nation in Yancey Gates and B.J. Mullins, polevaulted the Celtics into the championship against the big dog, The Indy Spiece Heat.
Despite 23 big points from Jaime Graham (White's Creek) the Celtics simply ran out of gas and fell to the powerful Spiece group 63-52. Also playing well for the Nashville boys was Josh Slater (Lipscomb) who scored double figures most games and played very good defense, Gerald Robinson, who despite being injured played well, and the out of state boys G.W. Boone (Alabama) and Jeremy Anderson (Kentucky).
The 16 and under Celtics finished the tourney 2-1 winning both pool play games over Reebok Capps All-Stars and Heartland Express before losing to the Jordan Shining Stars. The Celtics were led by Demario Williams (Culleoka) who averaged around 16 per game, Rapheal Gaskins (Glencliff) who dropped in 14+ and Charles Holt (Liberty Tech) who had a solid tourney with around 12 per game. Special mention to Chris Weitzel (Warren County) and Chandler Gross (Shelbyville) who both had good moments and are improving greatly as the summer season progresses. |
