Celtics win inaugural event
Nashville was the site for a new kid on the block. The first installment of the King of the South tournament made it's debut in the Music City.
Fittingly the hometown boys kept the title from leaving the city. The Nashville Celtics defeated the Midwest Storm to capture the title. Gerald Robinson (MLK) led the way for the Celtics with 19 points. Robinson was off the chain the entire weekend showing the rest of the basketball world that he is ready for a huge summer. In addition to Robinson the Celtics got fine performances from Jaime Graham (White's Creek), Josh Slater (Lipscomb) and Corye Hatcher (Antioch).
The Mid-State Ballerz Elite also made some noise at the King. The Ballerz won their pool with three tough victories including a dusting of the Tallahasee Wildcats, one of the nations toughest programs traditionally. The Ballerz moved into bracket play before falling to the Smyrna Stars. Once again great performances from Ballerz guard Jewon Long (Liberty) who continues to show why he is one of the five top players in the state. His high school teammate Josh Sain (Liberty) also had a fine weekend scoring from inside and out. His sterling play has caught the eye of numerous DI coaches.
The Smyrna Stars, the team that defeated the Ballerz, was led by Carter McMasters. The 6-10 Chattanooga native was a force in the paint defensively altering as many shots as blocked. His offensive game seems limited to the perimeter, but will expand when he gains the neccessary strength to force himself inside. |
