Music City becomes the place for hoops.
The 2006 Nike Memorial Day Classic sets up shop in Nashville over the holiday weekend with teams representing all corners of the country. The Volunteer state will send it's share of talent to the event with four teams in the 17 and under division, two in the 16's and four in the 15 and under.
The 17 and under division starts with the host team The Tennessee Travelers. The boys in orange will be led by Terrence Oglesby (Bradley Central), Omar Wattad (Science Hill), Antwaine Wiggens (Greeneville), Keith Dodd (Bradley Central) and Cameron Sharp (Knoxville Halls). The Travs will compete in Pool I along with Team Texas and Team Missouri.
The Murfreesboro Stars will make the short trip down I-40 with something to prove. The post Branden Wright era comes to a head with a chance to make some noise on the national level. The Stars will be led by Jimmy Oden (Seigel), Devon Jones (Liberty Tech), C.J. Davis (Goodpasture), Chris Goodwin (Hendersonville Christian) and Shawn Kennedy (Montessori Academy). The Stars will tangle with fellow Pool L members Athletes First and the New York Gauchos.
Very nice to see the Tennessee Thunder as a member of the tourney. The Nashville based team gets to play at home and will be poised to show they belong in the game. They will participate in Pool G along with the Arkansas Wings and the South Carolina Ravens. The Thunder will be led by Wil Peters (White's Creek), Demonte Harper (White's Creek), Matt Harris (Brentwood) and Michael McAdoo (Antioch) if he is fully recovered from his injury at the sub-state.
The final 17 and under representative will be the Memphis YOMCA. The boys from the Bluff City will compete in Pool C alongside Team Melo and the St. Louis Eagles. They will be led by Jason Jones (Ridgeway), Tim Ware (BTW), Ricky Taylor (Haywood County), Jeremy Rhodes (Bolivar Central) and Brennan Torstrick (USJ). This squad is comprised of rising juniors and they will play up for the remainder of the summer.
Leading the 16 and under contingent will be led by the Tennessee Travelers. The Travs will compete in Pool H alongside the likes of the Alabama Challenge and Boston BABC. The orange and white will be led by Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge), Jordan Damron (Maryville), Devin Holt (Giles County) and two huge late season additions Chandler Gross (Shelbyville) and Aaron Douglas (Maryville).
The other 16 and under rep will be the Memphis YOMCA. This version of the Y will be represented by the War Eagles which are one of the top 15 and under squads in the country. They will play up when the opportunity presents itself. They will compete in Pool E with the SYF Players and Team Melo. They will be led by Leslie McDonald (Briarcrest), Farrakan Hall (MUS), Gentry Hines (Raleigh-Egypt), Chris House (Kirby) and Greg Wooten (Briarcrest).
The 15 and under division will be represented by four very good squads. The Tennessee Travelers Orange will go in Pool D along with the Georgia Stars and the Metro Hawks. They will be led to the floor by William Moore (Chattanooga Christian), James Gallman (Knoxville Fulton), Deonta Twilley (Shelbyville), Ashlon Adams (Science Hill) and Steven Cook (Chattanooga Christian).
The schedule calls for the Tennessee Travelers Navy which will actually be the Tennessee Tigers. The Tigers will compete in Pool F with Team Ferrari, the Pulley Panthers and the Arizona Stars. They will trot out to the opening tap with Taverus Jefferson (Ensworth), Zeke Mason (Davidson Academy),Miles Adafo-Adjei (Ensworth),Hunter Miller (CPA) and Gary Pope (Ensworth).
The Memphis YOMCA will make the trip to Nashville with hopes of bringing back some hardware. The Y will be led to the floor by Ian Clark (Germantown),Jordan Brown (MUS) and Tony Payne (Bolton). The boys will compete in Pool B along with the Kansas City Keys and the St. Louis Eagles.
The final 15 and under team will be the Murfreesboro Stars. The Stars will be led by John Jenkins (Station Camp),Joe Lee (Riverdale), Gary Jackson (Oakland) and Chase Dunn (Livingston Academy). To make their presence felt the Stars will need to win Pool C alongside the SYF Rising Stars and the D.C. Blue Devils.
Stay tuned for continued coverage throughout the weekend for both of the major national events. |
