News and notes from the MDC. The Nike Memorial Day Classic concluded on Monday night with two of our Tennessee squads playing in their respective championship games. The Tennessee Travelers 17's advanced to the bronze championship game before bowing to the Miami Tropics in a very tough contest. The Memphis YOMCA (War Eagles) advanced to the title contest only to fall in a close contest to the New York Gauchos.

Before the tourney even had a chance to start the host team Travelers had to adjust. A no-show by one of the teams forced the Travs to split into two squads. The first squad was able to capture a silver division berth but fell in the first round of bracket action. The other squad advanced to the bronze division and was able to get a victory in the opening round. The Travelers then put their whole team back together and made their trek thru the bronze bracket before falling to the Tropics.

Leading the way for the Travelers were Omar Wattad (Science Hill) who had a very steady weekend averaging in excess of 23.0 points per game including a huge 33 point outburst against Team Texas. Wattad was equallly tough on the defensive end snatching boards and putting the clamps on his unsuspecting defender. Terrence Oglesby (Bradley Central) continued his brilliant summer dropping bombs all over Nashville and drawing the attention of those in attendance. The Travelers also got consistent weekend play from Cameron Sharp (Knoxville Halls), who kept the team under control with his steady play from the point, Davis Warner (Smyrna) , who scored from inside and out and played the best basketball of his summer, and Tony White Jr. (Bearden), who had a 30 points game early in the tourney.

In the remainder of the 17 and under division the Tennessee Thunder captured a victory over the South Carolina Ravens and finished the tourney 1-2. The Mufreesboro Stars had a solid run winning a couple of games and advancing to the bronze division playoffs.

In 16 and under action the Memphis YOMCA (War Eagles) had a fantastic weekend advancing to the title game. The Y who continue to play up in age group got balanced scoring the entire weekend but were led by Leslie McDonald (Briarcrest). The athletic combo guard scored from the perimeter and the interior and showed why he is still the top player in the state in the Class of 2009. Others who played well include Greg Wooten (Briarcrest), Farrakhan Hall (MUS) and Johnnie Williams (MUS).

The other 16 and under rep had two tough defeats in pool play losing both contests by a combined 9 points, but the Tennessee Travelers carved a big win in bracket play before losing to the Memphis juggernaut. Playing well for the Travs were Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge), Aaron Douglas (Maryville), Jared Stephens (Oak Ridge) and Chandler Gross (Shelbyville).

In the 15 and under division the Tennessee Travelers Orange finished 1-2 getting solid performances from James Gallman (Knoxville Fulton) and William Moore (Chattanooga Christian). The Tennessee Tigers who played in the tourney as the Tennessee Travelers Navy finished 2-2. The hometown kids got good performances as usual from Taverus Jefferson (Ensworth) and Zeke Mason (Davidson Academy).
