Update on the status of the top ranked player in Tennessee for the Class of 2005.
The name Tyler Smith is synonomous with Tennessee Prep Hoops. The top ranked player in the Class of 2005 and the first class to come through the rankings from freshman to seniors. I started doing rankings for Tennessee for HoopScoop in 2002, so the Class of 2005 had just started their freshman campaigns. This class became the first to come full circle and Tyler Smith was the headliner in that class.
Tyler Smith, who played his high school ball at Giles County in Pulaski, finished his stellar career winning a state title in 2003, he was MVP of the adidas Superstar Camp follwing his junior season and signed to play basketball at the University of Tennessee. He was a highlight film waiting to happen everytime he touched the basketball. His athletic prowess was astounding and his ability to take over a game was breathtaking.
When the coaching change at Tennessee took place Tyler decided to go the prep school route and ended up at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. Hargrave is one of the top post grad institutions in the country and plays a brutal basketball schedule as well as getting their student athletes prepared for the rigors of big time college hoops. His team is currently enjoying a fine season with a sterling 15-2 record and Tyler is averaging upwards of 19.0 points per game and almost 7 boards as well.
With a whole new recruiting process headed his way the young Mr. Smith has a slew of high level schools very interested in his services. Among the schools are Iowa, Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Kentucky, Arkansas and Charlotte. He has made visits to Iowa and Pittsburgh.
Tyler Smith will always have a special place in the heart of Tennessee Prep Hoops and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. It is good to see the young man doing so well and achieving the goals he set for himself and his future.
