This game was a shock to all in attendance as the Tornadoes got off to a 12-0 start and put away their county rivals in glorious fashion 70-49. The Tornadoes were led by junior guard Kyrus Lanxter who finished with a season high 28 points. Lanxter also grabbed 15 boards and dished out 4 assists and also found time to block four shots, sell popcorn in the concession stand and take tickets before the game. Alcoa led 41-25 at the half and never let the Rebels get any closer than 8. Brandon Warren, who finished the game with 16 points and 11 boards, had a small fanclub of University of Tennessee coaches and players on hand to watch and support the young man and help sway his commitment to the Vols.
The Rebels were led in scoring by Curtis Tate with 17, followed by Gary Tucker and Jordan Damron with 10 each.

West Tennessee:
Brentwood Academy 66
Memphis Ridgeway 58
Memphis Mitchell 69
Bolivar Central 67
Brentwood Academy, currently ranked 20th in the USA Today High School poll, outlasted defending AAA state champion Ridgeway 66-58 in the fantastic doubleheader played at the friendly confines of Belmont University on Saturday. Brentwood as always was led by North Carolina signee Branden Wright who scorched the nets for 22 points. He made a push for his usual triple double with 10 boards but came up short with "only" eight blocks. Southern Illinois signee Josh Bone, who loves the big stage, also dropped in 22 for the Eagles.
Ridgeway was led by sophomore forward Derrick Mason with 13 and Austin Peay signee Wesley Channels with 12.
Memphis Mitchell overcame a late Bolivar assault and escaped with a 69-67 victory over their AA nemesis on Saturday night. Mitchell held a comfortable 62-51 lead late in the second half when Memphis signee Willie Kemp scored eight straight points and brought Bolivar to within 66-64 with the game clock ticking down. Mitchell(19-5) got timely foul shooting at the conclusion of the game and a last second runner by Kemp glanced off the rim to preserve the victory. Kemp led Bolivar with 18 points and 10 assists. Sophomore wing Jeremy Rhodes chipped in 15 and Tennessee signee Wayne Chism was limited to 13 points after turning his ankle early in the second half.
Mitchell was led as always by Georgia Tech signee Thaddeus Young with 19 and Central Florida signee Andre Thornton with 13 points and 8 big caroms. |
