Memphis youngsters win the prestigious Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions
Tyler Stone (Memphis Central) scored 16 and helped the aggressive M33M Magic capture the 15 and under crown at the prestigious Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions with a 69-54 trouncing of powerful D.C. Assault. Stone, who finished the tourney averaging 10.3 points per game, garnered the MVP trophy for his consistent effort on the weekend. Joining Stone is the scoring column were Masceo Harmon (Memphis Central) with 13 and Ronald "Tank" Brown with 12. M33M had a magical run through the tourney escaping a very tough pool with victories over Playaz-White (58-57), who incidently won the Select porrtion of the event, Garner Road (62-55) and the Westchester Hawks (67-62). The playoff round started with a 73-62 victory over the juggernaut Atlanta Celtics, then a relative easy 79-69 thrashing of Mt. Royal/Mt. Melo culminating in the championship victory. As stated earlier Stone was awarded MVP kudos and was joined on All-Tournament squad by Harmon, Tim Peete (Memphis Central) and Allen Farmer (Cordova).
The Tennessee Thunder had a fantastic run through the Memorial Day classic finishing the event 2-2 and advancing to the select round playoffs. The Thunder finished 2-1 in pool play with victories over the United Celtics (72-52) and Southern California All-Stars (86-85) on two late foul shots by Dwight Tarwater (Webb). The playoff round brough the omnipresent Playaz-White and a very hard-fought 83-79 overtime loss. Coty Clarke (Antioch) led the playoff scoring with 22, followed closely by Tyler Hood (Lenoir City) with 15, Tarwater with 11 and Micah Ballard (William Blount) with 10. For the tourney Clarke finished with 1 19.5 points per game average and was named to the All-Tourney squad.
The Mid-State Ballerz had a good time at the event as well dropping a couple of tough contests and finished the event 1-2 in pool play. The Ballerz victory was a hard fought 68-67 contest over semi-final finisher Richmond Squires.
