Memphis YOMCA rules the roost in Little Rock.
Despite all the press that the other tournament garnered The Real Deal on the Hill was not the only game in town last weekend or should we say the only game in Arkansas. Down the road in Little Rock a little thing called Rockin the Rock was making a name of it's own.
The Memphis YOMCA made the most of their visit to the home of Walmart by dominating their competition to the tune of 31 victories between their six teams. The 14 and under group was outstanding finishing 8-1 between two teams.
The 17 and under squad, led by Maurice Miller (Raleigh-Egypt), finished pool play 3-0 and advanced to the semi's. Those in attendance were quick to praise the progress of 6-8 post Jerry Hampton (BTW), whose marked improvement was a source of inspiration for the group.
The 16 and under squad also made some headlines finishing their journey thru pool play unblemished at 3-0. Great effort from BTW point man Tim Ware, who led his squad by example and showed the poise that has been expected of him. Coaches near and far were in attendance to see the exploits of Jason Jones (Ridgeway). The 6-5 combo guard showed good range and explosion to the bucket.
The highlight of the weekend was the sterling effort of the 15 and under red squad who shocked the world playing up in the 16 and under division and capturing the title. Praise was heaped on the quartet of outstanding young talent led by Leslie McDonald (Briarcrest), Greg Wooten (Briarcrest), Gentry Hines (Raleigh-Egypt) and Farrahakan Hall (MUS). The glitter squad played years above their age bracket and showed a knowledge and passion for the game that will set them well for the future.
The "other" 15 and under squad playing as the blue team finished pool play at 3-0 and advanced to the semis. Good efforts was displayed by Marlon Brown (Harding Academy) and Courtney Easterwood (Christian Brothers). |
